A turnbuckle is a three-piece metal fastening device that is designed to modify the applied tension slowly without spinning the cable/rope to which it is attached. The turnbuckle usually is enabled with an extended or rectangular body and features different screw holes threaded at opposite ends at the two-threaded inserts. The threads of the turnbuckle either feature a hook or screw-eye at the non-threaded side. When these inserts are threaded into the device and the buckle is rotated, the screws are detached from the body causing the tension to be released. Here are the few common types of turnbuckles used in different applications.
Hook Turnbuckles
These kinds of turnbuckles have a hook at both ends hence they are called hook turnbuckles. The hook portion contains a shaft along with an open hook on the exterior end and a threaded shaft on the interior of the turnbuckle, which blends with the main nut of the turnbuckle. The hook design of these turnbuckles is ideal for applications where the attachment is relatively easy and the anchor point does not slip out of the opening of the turnbuckle.
Eye Turnbuckles
These types of turnbuckles have a circular and enclosed connector on one or each side. The circular part of the turnbuckle is called an eye and this portion consists of a shaft, featuring an eye on the exterior and a threaded shaft on the interior, which blends with the main nut of the turnbuckle.
Stub End Turnbuckles
The stub end turnbuckles consist of two threaded shafts, which combine with the turnbuckle’s main nut. These turnbuckles are ideal for applications where a connector is not needed for an anchor point and in areas, where the turnbuckle is used to push apart objects on each end.
